We shot this video in the basement of a café. I sat in front of Sene for 4 minutes as people walked back and forth. I didn’t want to do anything but capture the moment I was watching for as long as I could. I didn’t want to forget he red couch matched with the beads and the lighting. Denitia eventually sat down next to him and the two started talking. Denitia turned to me at one point and asked, “Why are you filming us right now?” but Sene knew why and kept talking to her.
We didn’t think this would become a music video for anything. It was too simple of a shot and not enough going on, but I wanted to match the moment with the feel of a song. We had talked about a video for two songs “again. (new ride)” and “breath.scream.dream.” but I wanted to do something bigger and more story based with A(NR) so we chose b.s.d. 9 hours later I came up with this.
I hope you like!

This is the trailer to Sly 5th Ave’s upcoming album, AKUMA.

“I went to Nigeria to bury my grandmother in 2011. I had never experienced a traditional Nigerian burial, let alone of a Chief! 72 hours of canons firing, music playing, dancing, eating, ceremonies, you name it. The album “Akuma”, which is named after my family village, was/is my snapshot of the whole experience.”
I was happy to co-direct the entire making of the documentary with him. Watching Sly create this music from scratch, around the time he began touring with Prince, was incredible. So much of his life was poured into this album. More to come from this.
